Abstract
An Acoustic Phonetic Study on the Production of Korean Word-Initial Alveolar Fricatives by Advanced Chinese Learners.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the acoustic phonetic characteristics of Korean word-initial alveolar fricatives produced by advanced Chinese learners and to identify any differences between two groups by comparing them with native Korean speakers. To this end, 10 female Chinese speakers enrolled in graduate school at a university in Seoul and 10 female Korean speakers from the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions were selected as subjects. The total duration, fricative segment duration, aspiration segment duration, the center of gravity, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis of the fricatives, and F0 of the following vowel were measured and compared. The results showed differences between the two groups in the total duration of /sa/ and /s’a/, as well as in the fricative and aspiration segment durations for /sa/, /s’a/, /si/, and /s’i/. For the center of gravity, differences were observed between the two groups for the corresponding sounds /sa/, /si/, and /s’i/, while differences in standard deviation and kurtosis were found for all corresponding sounds /sa/, /s’a/, /si/, and /s’i/. For skewness, only /sa/ showed a difference between the two groups. Regarding the F0 of the following vowel, a difference was found only for /sa/. These findings suggest that the /s/and/s’/ sound produced by advanced Chinese learners are likely to sound similar to native Korean speakers. Additionally, it was confirmed that the place of articulation for /s/ and /s’/ in /sa/, /si/, and /s’i/ is relatively more forward for Chinese learners than for native speakers. Lastly, the F0 of /sa/ produced by Chinese learners will likely sound unnatural to native Korean speakers.
