Abstract
Phonological substitution phenomena in messenger corpora: Focused on young adults in their 20s in Seoul.
This study investigates phonological variations, specifically focusing on phoneme substitution, within the messenger conversations of young adults in their twenties from Seoul. The analysis aims to explore how spoken language characteristics are reflected in text-based messenger dialogues. First, we discuss vowel substitutions, revealing that male participants exhibited 492 instances of vowel substitution, accounting for 80.3% of all substitution occurrences, and representing 3.5% of their total utterances. In contrast, female participants showed 1,875 instances, equating to 66.1% of substitutions and 4.0% of total utterances. For males, the most frequently substituted vowels were /ɯ/ (35.4%), /a/ (17.9%), and /ʌ/ (17.5%), while for females, the order was /o/ (31.7%), /ʌ/ (23.8%), and /ɯ/ (17.8%). Notably, the substitution of /u/ for /o/ was prevalent among females, highlighting a significant phonetic shift in contemporary Seoul Korean. Then, we delve into consonant substitution, with females showing a 70.0% preference for plain consonants over tense ones due to keyboard efficiency, whereas males demonstrated a higher inclination towards tense consonants due to tensification in Korean.
