Abstract 

Topic structure of phonological research in Korea over the past three decades as reflected in the journal Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology: A comparison with international research trends. This study investigates the topic structure of phonological research in Korea as reflected in the journal Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology and its temporal dynamics over the past three decades. It also compares this structure with that of phonological research as reflected in the international journal Phonology. Sixteen core topics were derived from topic modeling of 985 article abstracts collected from the two journals, and their prevalence patterns were compared along multiple dimensions. The results show that the topic structure has not remained stable over the past three decades. Topics oriented toward theoretical analysis were central in the earlier period but have declined markedly, while experiment-based topics that were once situated at the periphery have expanded substantially. This research trend is not fully aligned with the international pattern reflected in Phonology. While the traditional approach of Optimality Theory has been in decline, the focus of theoretical analysis has moved toward constraint-based probabilistic grammar models and machine learning, which is broadly compatible with international trends.
