The purpose of this paper is to analyze the vowel system of late Middle Korean (15^th century) with respect to the terminology (舌縮, 舌小縮, 不縮, 口蹙, 口長) used in Hunminjungum Haerye. First, regarding the diagonal system, we suggest that the feature [RTR] is one of the major features that divides retracted vowels(舌縮) and non-retracted vowels (舌小縮). By following specification theory, the vowel /i/(不縮) is redundant and behaves as a neutral vowel, considering Korean vowel harmony. Second, we propose that /u, o/ (口蹙) and /ə, a/(口長) are considered as [labial] and [low], respectively, and are used for feature enhancement (Stevens and Keyser 1989). Third, the application of  [+口蹙] and [+口長] makes vowels more marked than the three basic vowels: /i, ɨ, and ʌ/. Therefore, 舌縮 ([RTR]), 口蹙 ([labial]) and 口長 ([low]) are all independent phonological features that systematically distinguish seven vowels in late Middle Korean.
