Gillian Gallagher joined the Department of Linguistics as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Gallagher received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from M.I.T. (2010) and a B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Previously, Dr. Gallagher served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Linguistics at NYU.

Dr. Gallagher's work centers on sound patterns in language, particularly exploring restrictions on the shape of lexical roots. Her work uses experimental methodologies to investigate properties of speech perception and pattern learning that may underly grammatical restrictions, as well as probing speakers' grammatical knowledge of the patterns in their language.

Dr. Gallagher’s work has been published in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory and Phonology, and an article of hers will soon appear in Phonological Similarity: Perceptual and Articulatory Bases and Links to Grammatical Mechanisms, Lingua Special Issue. Dr. Gallagher has given presentations at many conferences, including meetings of the Linguistic Society of America, the North East Linguistics Society, and the U.Mass-MIT Meeting in Phonology, among others. Dr. Gallagher has conducted fieldwork in Bolivia, Mexico, and Greenland. Additionally, she has served as a reviewer for Phonology, LabPhon, Natural Language and Linguistic Theory.
