This talk will describe the design of the IViE project which was carried out around the turn of the 21st century and which aimed to provide a database and preliminary intonational analysis for some of the major urban accents of Great Britain and Ireland. In planning the project a number of choices had to be made: for instance, the varieties, the type of speakers, the materials to be recorded, and the analytic framework within which describe the intonation. The motivation for the choices made will be discussed.

Intonational variation is of several types, including the phonological (‘intonological’) categories used, their function in terms of communication, their phonetic realisation, and global differences affecting factors such as pitch range. Variation of these types will be exemplified using speech samples from the IViE database.
