With the development of electronic communications such as mobile devices, computer mediated communication has been growing rapidly the last 30 years, and it has become a subject of language research which must be causing controversies. For the data we collected from 55 college students, pictograms, abbreviations, omitted letters, and nonstandard spellings proved to be observable in Korean instant messages through instant messenger services (e.g. Kakao Talk). The frequency and type of emoticons were still observed but younger generations much prefer to use sticker emoticons (emojis) instead. Abbreviations and nonstandard spellings are also productive in Korean instant messages. Based on our data, many of them reflected the pronunciation of spoken language or reflected the economy principle. Especially, consonant initialism in Korean instant messages was aimed at economic efficiency, while a number of morpho-phonological processes were also used for word play or unique expressions.
