In Harmonic Serialism (McCarthy 2010, McCarthy and Pater 2016), Serial Harmony serves as a model dealing with feature spreading and has proven superior to previous approaches (McCarthy 2009, 2011). Nonetheless, given that the supportive evidence for the model comes solely from long-distance spreading, i.e. harmony, processes, the compatibility of Serial Harmony with local assimilation awaits exploration. Lo and Chung (2015) show that the model is insufficient to account for Taiwanese local nasalization patterns and suggest that SHARE([nasal]), the nasalization imperative in Serial Harmony, should be split into three member constraints: *LINKONE([nasal]), OCP([nasal]), and *NOLINK([nasal]). In this article, I demonstrate that Serial Harmony has difficulty capturing local vowel nasalization, for which reason I propose a further split of Lo and Chung’s *LINKONE([nasal]) into two directional constraints: *NASAL-ORAL and *ORAL-NASAL. More importantly, the split constraints are not member constraints of SHARE([nasal]) but should be recognized as independent in CON.
