Most work on segment inventories is framed in terms of phonemic systems in the tradition of Trubetzkoy. However, laryngeal typology holds that thoroughly voiced stops in Romance languages will be represented phonologically with the feature [voice], leaving the voiceless unaspirated stops laryngeally neutral, whereas the typically aspirated stops of languages like English or German are marked with the feature [spread glottis], rendering the passively voiced stops in these languages neutral (Iverson and Salmons 2007). Following their notion of laryngeal typology, we argue that the choice of aspiration letters(ㅋ/ㅌ/ㅍ) in Korean for plosives in loans from ‘voicing languages’ (e.g. Romance or Slavic languages) is inappropriate, while the assignment of aspiration letters is relevant for the plosives from ‘aspiration languages’ such as English or German. Furthermore, to investigate these patterns of adaptation for the plosives in Korean loanwords, we have also reviewed historical changes for conventions in loanwords from various sources.
