Abstract
Neutralization of Korean coda affricates and fricatives: Acoustic and aerodynamic evidence and an Articulatory Phonology account. Cross-linguistic research has shown that phonological neutralization does not always result in phonetically identical outputs, a phenomenon known as incomplete neutralization. In Korean, all obstruents in coda position are neutralized to unreleased lenis plosives; however, whether this neutralization is phonetically complete remains debated, particularly for affricates and fricatives whose neutralization entails a change in manner of articulation. This study analyzes the coda neutralization of affricates and fricatives in Korean using both acoustic and aerodynamic measurements. The results reveal that incomplete neutralization is present in both affricates and fricatives. However, the phonetic dimensions in which residual traces of underlying contrasts emerge differ according to manner of articulation. The findings are evaluated against the frameworks of archiphoneme and morphophonemic alternation, whose limitations are identified, and an alternative account is offered within Articulatory Phonology. An extension of the gestural score incorporating aerodynamic parameters is additionally proposed.
