Call for Papers for the 2nd International Symposium on Applied Phonetics

Abstract Submission
Deadline: May 18, 2018 (23:59 Japan time)
Notification of Acceptance: June 18, 2018

The organizers are pleased to announce that abstract submission is now open for the 2nd International Symposium on Applied Phonetics (ISAPh2018), which will be held at the University of Aizu (Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima, Japan) from the 19th to the 21st of September 2018.

Interest in the importance of speech communication has been growing in recent years, and phonetic knowledge is essential in the teaching of any language. In our increasingly globalized society, educators involved in teaching pronunciation and phonetics have an important role to play, but many feel isolated and are uncertain about what and how to teach. Following on the success of ISAPh2016 in Nagoya, Japan, this symposium continues the opportunity to raise questions, discuss issues, share information, and in particular:
- to present research results and themes in phonetics/pronunciation education
- to bring up issues and problems in relation to phonetics/pronunciation education
- to report on phonetics/pronunciation education in your country or organization

Topics include, but are not limited to:
1. Teaching general phonetics to major students
2. Teaching general phonetics to non-major students
3. Teaching phonetics of a specific language
4. Teaching pronunciation in monolingual classes
5. Teaching pronunciation in multilingual classes
6. Teaching L2 pronunciation in L1/L2
7. Teaching pronunciation to adults
8. Teaching pronunciation to young students
9. Phonetics in teacher training
10. Phonetics in immersion classes
11. L2 pronunciation acquisition
12. Teaching prosody
13. Socio-phonetic factors in the classroom
14. Phonetics/pronunciation training tools
15. Technology for teaching phonetics/pronunciation

Abstracts should be submitted via EasyChair at <https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=isaph2018>. All abstracts will be peer-reviewed before acceptance. Do not include author names or affiliations, and please submit abstracts as property-free PDF files. Abstracts must be no more than 2 pages, including figures and references, and they must be written in English. Please use the template provided on the conference website (see below). During the abstract submission process on EasyChair, you will be asked to provide (1) author info, (2) Title of abstract, (3) Keywords - at least three, (4) Topics - select as many as are relevant from the given choices, (5) your preference for oral or poster presentation, and (6) your PDF file to upload.

Keynote speakers are:
Dr. Tracey M. Derwing (University of Alberta / Simon Fraser University)
Dr. Shigeto Kawahara (Keio University)
Dr. Natasha Warner (University of Arizona)
Dr. Takayuki Arai (Sophia University)

In addition to the keynote presentations, at least one workshop will also be included in the conference registration. ISAPh2018 will consist of oral presentations (15 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A) and poster presentations.

Note that on the weekend before ISAPh2018, the Phonetic Society of Japan is having their semi-annual conference in Okinawa, Japan <http://www.psj.gr.jp/jpn/annual-convention/第32回大会2018>. Most of those presentations are in Japanese, but some are in English.

Starting the day after ISAPh2018, there is a 3-day festival in Aizuwakamatsu! It's called the "Aizu Matsuri", and it's a kind of samurai festival. The main event is a parade around the city by groups dressed up in samurai clothing, including people on horseback. A famous actor/actress always attends the event and goes in the parade. An English website showing you some of the features of the Aizu area can be found here: <https://aizuwakamatsu.mylocal.jp/trip/en/>.
